Description:
10 members participated in the event and traveled to the new airport site on Lantau Island, about 40 km from the city center. The air traffic control center with a 85 m control tower was located in the middle part of the air field. Members were briefed on elements of air traffic control including preparation and exchange of aeronautical information, air ground communications and airport and ground movement control. A tour of the facilities included the control room on top of the tower, aviation meteorological office, airport control center and training center with simulation equipment. The new airport, which costs a total of US$20 billion, will come into operation on July 6, 1998. It will be able to handle 87 million passengers and 9 million tons of air cargo each year.
